India Crystal Valley

India Crystal Valley

Crystal Valley is a small, 25-acre estate in Biligiri village, Somwarpet, in the north of Coorg. It sits at 985 metres on a steep north-easterly slope, run by Mac Machaiah, who has supplied South India Coffee Company for four seasons. Most of the estate’s lots are washed or honey, with a few of the best blocks kept back as naturals.

Coorg is better known for robusta, grown in the warm, humid shade of the Western Ghats among pepper, cardamom and orange trees. Arabica does well in its cooler, higher pockets, and Crystal Valley is one of them, planted with Selection 9, S795 and Catuai types.

This is a red honey: after pulping, a good share of mucilage stays on the bean. The coffee then ferments in sealed drums with virtually no oxygen, which slows the microbes and keeps the cup tight, before drying for about 12 days across polyhouse, raised beds and patio down to 12% moisture.

The result is sweet and rounded rather than winey: pomelo and sweet citrus up front, with a warm brown-spice finish that suits both filter and espresso.

Brazil Samba is a natural-processed blend grown at 1000-1150 MASL on the Rio Brilhante farm in Coromandel, Minas Gerais, run by the Urban family. This lot combines Catuaí 99, Catuaí 144, and Catucaí 20/15 varieties. Cherries are machine-harvested, hand-sorted, sun-dried on patios for five days, then finished in rotary dryers for consistency and sweetness. Beyond quality, Rio Brilhante is committed to sustainability-preserving natural land, using renewable energy, supporting local employment, and investing in community and education initiatives within the coffee-growing region.
