Starting from January 2021, Foreword is pledging 5% of our sales revenue derived from our coffee brew bags (i.e. Java Malabar, Java Wanayasa, Pong's Washed, Laos NaOr, and Yunnan Aqi Badu) to community development projects in coffee growing regions in Asia.
We choose to commit 5% of our revenue as it is more transparent than using profits. Profit is the amount left after deducting costs from revenue, and cost is variable and can be tricky to measure (e.g. manpower costs into producing a coffee brew bag is difficult to quantify).
This 5% for Community initiative is aligned with our steps towards creating a more sustainable coffee value chain from farmers to consumers. Coffee growers play an important role at the start of the value chain, yet they receive only a small part of the economic pie. A more sustainable model must be conceived to support the coffee growers.
There are research and reports on coffee price crisis (https://sca.coffee/pricecrisis) affecting the coffee industry. Coffee is a commodity product and prices are subjected to demand and supply forces in the market. By producing specialty coffee, the industry hopes to break out of the market forces and to focus on bringing value through increased coffee quality. However, that is still not sufficient enough. This map (https://carto.com/blog/enveritas-coffee-poverty-visualization/) shows how some 44% of smallholder coffee farmers are living under the poverty line.
Our approach towards a more equitable value chain? Redirecting revenue to the coffee growers.
This idea of a Circular Value Chain is not new and other large companies have grand plans of implementation (https://www.forbes.com/sites/amazonwebservices/2019/08/28/accenture-and-amazon-managed-blockchain-connecting-small-scale-producers-into-the-value-chain/). Here in Foreword, we take our small steps to be part of this movement through the sales of our coffee brew bags.
We work with our coffee partners in Asia for any community development projects they have that benefit the coffee growers there. These are our trusted partners or established coffee organisations with proven track record of working with the locals.
As part of responsible use of the funds disbursed to our coffee partners, we require them to give us regular updates on their community projects and a report on how the funds are being used. Foreword will then publicize the impact on our website and social media channels to inform our customers and followers. Impact indicators would be both quantitative and qualitative.
We hope for consumers to be more aware about coffee sustainability throughout the value chain. Consumers have the power to make a difference through our purchase decisions.
2021 is the first year of this initiative and we hope to roll out to more products to channel more funds for capacity building throughout the coffee value chain in the long-run.

A ristretto is a “shorter” version of an espresso with less water used during extraction, usually at a brew ratio of 1:1 to 1:1.5. Following this brew ratio, members at this tier earn 1.5 reward points with every S$1 spent online.
Meanwhile, an espresso is usually brewed with a brew ratio of 1:2; following this brew ratio, Espresso members earn 2 reward points with every $1 spent online.
However, reward points will not be issued for vouchers and e-vouchers purchases across all membership tiers.
If you are an Espresso member, you will receive one $5 e-voucher during your birthday month. If you are a Black VIP member, you will receive one $20 e-voucher on top of one complimentary beverage and pastry from any of our café outlets during your birthday month.
For Espresso members, a minimum of 150 points is needed to maintain your membership tier. If you do not hit the minimum within 12 months from the date you qualify as an Espresso member, you will be downgraded to a Ristretto member.
For Black VIP members, a minimum of 2000 points is needed to maintain your membership tier. Additionally, if you do not hit the minimum of 150 points within 12 months from the date you qualify as a Black VIP member, you will be downgraded to a Ristretto member.
Yes. All reward points are valid for 1 year from the date you qualify for the membership tier that you are in. Reward points expire after 1 year and cannot be brought forward regardless of the tier you are in.
We have curated a list of gifts which you can redeem with your points. Check out the list of gifts you can redeem here.
On top of that, with every 200 points collected, we will be sending you a FREE drink voucher which you can claim from any cafe outlet. Feel free to customize the drink in any way with no charges; the drink is on us to thank you for your continuous support.
For every 1200 reward points collected, you may convert your reward points into S$20 value to donate to any campaign listed on Giving.sg. Just log into Giving.sg, select the cause you wish to support, and we will make the donation on your behalf.
Some donations are tax deductible. However, due to PDPA reasons, we will not be collecting your personal data to help claim tax deductions for your donation using reward points. Please take note that Foreword will not ask you for your NRIC no. in any cases and you are reminded to be careful when giving out your personal details to suspicious requests.
Please check back again as we are updating this section.
In determining the number of reward points earned for your next membership tier, we do not take into account the number of points redeemed.
No. We will back-allocate the additional points earned through your new membership tier from any full transaction made from the point when you reached your new membership tier, when we update the membership tier for you.
For example, you currently have 145 points in your account and you made a transaction of $10 which gives you 15 points. You now have a total of 160 points in your account which qualifies you for the Espresso membership tier.
The excess of 10 points earned through your previous membership tier (i.e. Ristretto) will not be multiplied by the new conversion rate in your new membership tier (i.e. Espresso).
However, if you make a new transaction after the accumulation of 160 reward points in your account, we will be able to allocate the additional reward points earned in your new transaction based on the new membership tier’s conversion rates.
