India Gungegiri

India Gungegiri

Gungegiri sits in the Baba Budangiri range of Chikmagalur, the hills where coffee is said to have first been planted in India. Opened by the Crawford brothers in 1890, the estate takes its name from the streams that rise on the hill. Arabica grows between roughly 910 and 1,400 metres under a canopy of native trees, in heavy monsoon rain and lateritic red soil.

Today the estate is part of Sangameshwar Coffee, run by the Appadurai family, and has worked with South India Coffee Company for two seasons. The trees are a mix of Indian selections bred by the Coffee Board for rust tolerance and cup, led by Selection 9 and the long-established S795.

This lot is a washed coffee with one deliberate change: after pulping, the mucilage ferments for 27 hours in open tanks with an added Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast before washing and patio drying. The yeast gives the ferment a steadier direction than wild microbes alone, which shows as a clean cup with chocolate weight and a lifted citrus and plum finish.

Limu Kossa lies in the green, fertile plateau of Jimma - a region where high altitude, rich volcanic soils, and natural forest combine to produce Ethiopia's most sought-after washed lots. Farms here run from 1,750 to nearly 2,000 meters above sea level, with shade trees and abundant rainfall supporting biodiversity and slow cherry ripening. Most coffee is produced by smallholders, each handpicking ripe cherries and bringing them to a local washing station at Gera Farm for fully washed processing: careful fermentation, clean water, and slow drying on raised beds ensure clarity and brightness in the cup.

Our coffee bags* are made from low density polyethylene (LDPE) and are recyclable in the blue recycling bins. Simply empty the contents of your coffee bag and peel off the labels before recycling it.
